Sarah Elizabeth Taylor Lawton, former enslaved person and great-great-grandmother to researcher Marla Jackson’s children, was the only woman shot the day before Quantrill’s Raid. She overheard two spies speaking of plans to raid Lawrence, and reported what she’d heard to law enforcement officer Marshall Thad Prentice. The men were arrested, but released shortly after denying the accusations, likely a result of bias due to the color of Elizabeth’s skin. In an act of revenge, the men tracked down Elizabeth and shot her, and the very next day Lawrence was burned to the ground, killing 150 people .
